WBCC 1sts and 2nds go top of the league!

Last week saw the 1sts play home to a newly relegated Caterham side. On what was expected to be a wet day the toss was going to be important, in a game that could be vital at the end of the season as Caterham look to bounce straight back and earn promotion.

Caterham won the toss, and put WBCC straight into bat, hoping to make use of the wet conditions and benefit from any Duckworth Lewis calculations if the came into effect. Both opening bowlers started well, bowling good lengths and getting movement in the air. WBCC openers Tim Golding (43) and Jai Uvaraju (38) were equal to the task, seeing out the opening bowlers. As the two bowlers spells moved into their 7th overs, it became apparent that Caterham were struggling for bowling options and WBCC batted to keep wickets in hand and attack the 4th and 5th bowlers. With the platform set, Hannes Black (56) came in and did just that, getting WBCC up to 204 off of 45 overs.

After Tea the rain was coming down quite heavily, but both sides took to the field hoping to take the points. Caterham started very carefully, and despite some excellent bowling WBCC were unable to make a breakthrough. At the break for drinks Caterham still had not lost a wicket, but were only moving at around 2 an over and needed to start taking some risks. On came Pete Grant to break the partnership, and cleared up the top order taking 4 wickets. In the end a convincing victory as Caterham finished on 171 for 9 off of their 45 overs. A great team performance with everyone contributing with bat or ball, and good pressure in the field.

The 2nds unfortunately had their game canceled as opposition Effingham could not field a team. This meant they got the points by default and both 1sts and 2nds moved to the top of their respective leagues.

The 3rd XI went into their game away at Farncombe knowing that a win would complete a 100% weekend for the club.

This target was boosted when Mitch successfully won his first toss on the fifth attempt and elected to put pressure on the Farncombe batsmen early with the strong bowling line up. Things however did not go to plan as the opening batsmen raced to 62-0 off the first eight overs, bowling changes were required and James Hopper (2-15) and Jon Hawke (4-53) did not disappoint as they immediately started taking wickets aided by some very good catching in the field. Mitch (4-11) then brought himself on and cleaned up the tail as Farncombe finished on 146 off 33 overs.

Knowing that Worplesdon had 52 overs to chase down the total Farncombe knew early wickets were key.

Unfortunately for the 3rd XI this is exactly what happened as the Farncombe bowlers constantly threatened the stumps. Christo (73) coming in three held the innings together as wicket fell around him and found support with Gavin (26) to see WBCC to 132-6. However a flurry of wickets left the last wicket partnership of Liam and Mitch requiring 13 to win. With pressure building on both sides Mitch declared “we will do it in extras” as Liam (8 off 52 balls) showed extraordinary patience and intelligence to tie the game before hitting a four to win the game and get the 150 run batting point.

With confidence high the 3rd XI are looking to repeat the performance against East Horsley next weekend.
